In what could be called the "Super Smash Bros." of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Sonic Battle pits nine classic Sonic characters (plus one new) in an all-out melee. Battles take place on 3-D-ish battlefields (actually, they're isometric) against any four players at a time. Players have the ability to allocate their special attacks to, depending on whether they initiate their special attacks on the ground or in the air, including one type of special their character can "auto-guard" against.
Sonic Battle also includes a story mode, where Sonic, Tails, Rouge, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, and Shadow must power up newcomer Emerl, as Sonic calls him, to restore him to his former self. Unfortunately for them, they don't know what the new robot's primary purpose is. During the course of the story, Emerl can copy any character's moves for his own use, and players can customize him to his liking.
