The Game Boy Color was a revolutionary step for the Game Boy line. Although there have been color handhelds before this (Game Gear, etc.) it improved on most of the issues with its older rivals, such as battery compsumption. Released in November 1998, the added color to the Game Boy's 8-bit graphics. This allowed for a pallete of 32000+ colors with 256 being used at any one time. The older black and white games could still be played on the newer system, and the player had a choice of 16 different color palettes to choose from when playing them.
In addition, the GBC included an infrared port, which allowed for exchanging small amounts of game data between two GBC systems.
