The Linux Kernel was created back in the early 90s by Linus Trovalds, as a solution to other older, similar operating systems like MIMIX. This open source OS is fully customizable, and remains one of the more popular server OSes these days. However, although there are some Windows-made games that will run on Linux without anything extra, they are rare and not many Linux-exclusive games are out there.
